Latest report for the Velo race last Sunday on the Witham Wheelers circuit.
The weather was fairly kind to the riders for the latest round of the Velo series of races on Sunday 13th July. Just one or two light showers and a light breeze.
The Witham Wheelers were well represented again with Carol Milne in Group 2, Dave Herd in Group 3, Dave Mould, John Pygott and Crispin Bridges-Webb in Group 4, Gary Rands, Martin Milne, Chris Samler, Phil Etches, Rob Johnson and Mick Egner in Group 5 and Paul Connelly and Mark Kokocinski in Group 6.
The circuit at 11.5 miles long and undulating in places is a test for all the riders and the Groups needed to ride well together. Groups 1 & 2 worked hard to stay away from the faster groups. Into the 2nd of the 3 laps Groups 3 & 4 came together and Group 5 were struggling to make up ground on them.
At the bell, for the start of the last lap Groups 1 & 2 still hadn’t been caught but the fast moving Group 3 & 4 looked likely to catch them. Group 5 were still ahead of Group 6 but not by much and the catch looked inevitable. If they wanted to catch the earlier Groups they needed to get a move on!
Groups 1 & 2 were caught by Groups 3 & 4 before Skillington as the leaders came out of Skillington Dave Moulds made his attack on the long uphill drag out of the village. As he came round the corner to the finishing straight having come up the Stoke Rochford hill he was still clear of the fast chasing group. His tired legs were working as hard as possible as he tried to maintain his lead and the last 200 metres must have felt much longer. His audacious attack paid off and he crossed the line to take the overall win.
Groups 5 & 6 weren’t too far behind at the finish.
John Pygott and Crispin Bridges –Webb were 2nd & 3rd respectively.
Dave Herd finished in 11th place.
Mark Kokocinski was 2nd in Group 6 and 13th overall.
Gray Rands was 1st and Martin Milne was 2nd in Group 5
Carol Milne was 1st in Group 2.
It was another good result for the Witham Wheelers and in particular for Dave Moulds who achieved his first overall win in the Velo series.
