The latest round of the Velo 99 race series was held at Serlby on Sunday 1st June. This time the weather was lovely – warm and sunny and only a little wind.
Once again the Witham Wheelers were well represented. The early Groups had a good handicap as it was expected that the faster Groups would make up time on a fast course in good conditions.
Group 1 consisted of 4 riders including Carol Milne. They rode together well and set a good pace forcing the other Groups to chase hard. The Group 2 riders broke up as they were caught by the faster Groups. Group 4, including Dave Moulds, Ian Makevit and John Pygott were a fast moving Group and had caught Group 3 before the halfway point.
Group 5 included Ross Tomblin Chris Samler, Martin Milne, John Farmer and Gary Rands. They looked to be working well together but made no impression on Group 4 and in fact lost time on them. In Group 6 we had Paul Conneely and Mark Kokocinski. The Group split in half and whilst the leading 4, which included Paul and Mark , worked well and were closing in Group 5 no-one was able to close in on Group 1.
Coming into the last lap Group 1, still working well together, Â had a healthy lead over the fast moving Group 4 who were the closest Group to them.
As Group 1 approached the finish line Carol Milne was leading the sprint for the line and held on for her first win.
Dave Moulds was 3rd in Group 4 and 8th overall
Chris Samler won the sprint for Group 5 with Gary Rands and Martin Milne 2nd and 3rd.
Mark Kokocinski won the sprint for Group 6 and Paul Conneely was 3rd.
Overall it was another good race for the Witham Wheelers.
