Witham Wheelers held their 5th Reliability ride of the year over a 50 mile course that headed out through Oasby before circling south to Castle Bytham and returning to Grantham via South Witham and Skillington. Bright sunny skies tempted 60 riders to sign on but a strong south westerley and the rolling course made it a testing ride.
However only 3 riders were forced to retire to the support vehicles and most riders finished in their target average speeds. Group 1 which most of the newcomers to cycling start in had an enjoyable ride averaging 12 mph over a shorter route of around 30 miles. Group 2 also kept together well with most riders finishing the full route in just under 15mph. A spate of punctures due to a lot of hedge cutting on the route disrupted the rhythm of the biggest group 3 which by the end had broken into a lot of smaller groups as did group 4 which was similarly affected. The quickest group 5 contained only 4 riders but they worked well together to finish in 20 mph a good average in the conditions.
Next Sunday 9th the 6th ride takes place over another 50 mile rolling route down towards Rutland water. First group leaves the Cricket Club on Gorse Lane at 9.00am, all welcome. Again there will be a shorter route of around 30 miles for those not yet ready for the full route.
