The latest round of the Pedal pushers circuit races took place at Barkston Heath promoted by Spalding CC. This also incorporated the East Mids Youth champs and saw some excellent competitive racing in warm dry conditions with over 200 riders taking part in the 6 race programme.
Of the club riders taking part:
Youth B – Under 14s With 4 strong riders breaking away early on it was a tough race for the club’s riders with Adam Egner best placed in 7th, Robert McAndrew 14th and Charlie Cann 17th in his debut race, showing an excellent pedalling style and can only improve with experience.
Youth A – Under 16s In an exciting sprint finish Karl Baillie lost the photo finish by a tyres width to Joey Walker after the two riders broke away from the bunch 10 minutes into the race. However with Joey not eligible for the East Mids champs Karl took the Gold Medal. Reece Egner rode well in the chasing bunch to finish 9th overall and Jennifer McAndrew won the Bronze medal in the Girls race holding off a strong challenge from Maddie Gammons of Bourne.
Senior 2/3 category A quality field of second and third category riders including Double World Junior Champion Lucy Garner kept the pace high throughout with numerous attempted breaks never gaining more than 15 seconds until with 5 laps to go 5 riders including Peter Cocker opened up a 10 second gap which the main bunch was unable to close. On the last lap Peter looked to have opened up a winning lead into the final corner but was unable to hold off a fast finishing Phil Giles (Beeston RC) and Ben Swift (Bike Box) in the charge to the line.
