There’s something about Scunthorpe C-X, it seems to attract the rain, heavy rain rain interspersed with light rain all day, at least there was little wind so it wasn’t too cold!
But Cyclo-Cross riders are a hardy bunch and there was a good turnout of riders in all the age groups as this is one of the favourite courses in the league, with its mix of woodland tracks, sand pits and short drop offs and climbs.
First up was the U16 youth riders which saw another excellent ride by Amy Kolbert in 22nd overall and first U14 girl.
Good turn-out by the youngsters from the Go-Ride section, making the long trek up to Scunthorpe with Noah Lane 9th, Max Kolbert 10th, Hariett Bailey 11th and Jacob Crowley 13th in the under 9s.
In the under 12s Joshua Lane 7th, Oliver Bailey 9th, Isal Kolbert 14th and Samuel Crowley 15th.
Next up it was the old men with Paul Conneeley again best of the local riders in 20th overall (4th vet 50), with Simon Cocker 43rd but moving up to 2nd Vet 60 claiming his first prize in many years and Dave Miller 72nd (8th vet 60). Sean East had a mechanical and was forced to retire.
The final race was for the seniors and the course was starting to cut up with the incessant rain, making it more challenging for the riders. Reece Egner looked to have the better of his brother Adam this week, riding well in the top 10 until after a close encounter with a tree he was forced to retire. Adam kept going well in what turned out to be a longer race than usual as the commissaires didn’t quite get their timing right, adding on an extra lap. Professional rider Graham Briggs again rode to an excellent win pulling away steadily from George Thompson from sleaford on every lap.
The Ladies race was run a the same time time as the Senior men but completing fewer laps and an excellent ride by Julie Clark saw her take 1st veteran ladies and 6th overall.
Next Sunday 21st forget Witham Wheelers promote their round of the Lincs League at Stroxton, full details on the club web site, first youth (age 12-16) race starts at 10.15. with over 250 riders expected to participate during the day.
