The National Cyclo-cross championships took place in Shrewsbury with Witham Wheelers represented by Amy Kolbert in the U14 girls’ race.
A mixture of technical woodland, muddy grass straights and a purpose built bridge with very high steps made for a challenging course quite unlike anything experienced racing in the Lincolnshire league. Gridded near the back, Amy managed to gain places in the technical woodland, but was then overtaken as she struggled with grip in the mud.
On the final lap, she accelerated on the tarmac in an attempt to get past another girl, but unfortunately fell off on the corner, finding out that gravel rash can also occur in a cyclo-cross race. Despite jumping quickly back on the bike, she could not catch the other rider and finished 23rd in a field of over 40 riders.
