Witham Wheelers on Ride with GPS
All club members have been sent a link to join the ‘Ride with GPS’ club account, which is free to club members and gives the benefits detailed below. If you have not received one then please contact a committee member.
Non-club members can view the routes and activities but do not have access to the member benefits.
We think this will be a big help in communicating routes and activities to club members. Many thanks to Mike Ainsworth for his hard work in setting this up. Below is more information on how to use this and some useful links
Why we are changing:
We have reviewed how we maintain our inventory of regular cycling routes. Since Strava moved their route planning feature behind a subscription paywall, we have been reliant on some individual members who pay Strava subscriptions keeping club routes on their individual accounts. This is less than satisfactory and has resulted in the list of club routes on the website site having links that no longer exist.
The Change:
The club will now be using the Ride with GPS application for our routes. It is an application that many will be familiar with as it is used by many sportives. Importantly, it gives the club ‘ownership’ of our routes, so we are not reliant on individuals, and it is also free for our members, and prospective members to access. The application enables automatic synchronisation of routes to members’ Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead, or COROS accounts. We will also be using the application for our calendar of events.
Club members benefits:
The Witham Wheelers site on Ride with GPS is publicly viewable; however, membership of the site is restricted to club members.
As a member of Witham Wheelers, you now have free access to powerful Ride with GPS features for all of your Club’s routes, you can
- Navigate with turn-by-turn voice directions
- Sync routes wirelessly to your GPS device
- Download routes for offline riding
- Export and print club routes
How to use:
Our routes can be viewed in a number of different ways. Perhaps the best is using the collections feature where we have grouped the routes together in collections such as [Saturday%20Social%20Spins569.2%20km3,544%20m9%20itemsPublic]Saturday Social Rides, Sunday Café Rides, and the Winter to Spring Series. Routes can also be viewed as single list that can be filtered and sorted or an a map. The will also be linked to the specific ride in the events calendar. This enables us to share the details of each ride complete with the route(s) in a single link to our WhatsApp group and on our social media, such as in this link: Café Ride to the Old Filling Station, Navenby
Club members do not need to have a Ride with GPS account to access our site. It can be viewed by all on an internet browser and individuals will be able to download .gpx files of accounts. A free ‘Starter’ account with Ride with GPS will give access to the club routes using the Ride with GPS mobile app and gives basic route planning functionality. Members with a Ride with GPS account can unlock premium features when using club routes by ‘joining’ our Ride with GPS site.
